Besides seeing and experiencing Tao culture, one of the most popular things to do on Orchid Island is scuba diving. The north and east coasts are popular spots, and usually divers walk in off the coast. You can book a scuba experience before you arrive, or arrange one through your hotel. From Hongtou, an narrow road crosses over the mountains to the more traditional east coast of the island, reaching the village of Yeyin first.
Open for nearly 20 years, this fantastic museum has a variety of exhibitions related to Bunun culture. Its exploration of the Bunun’s historic way of life is fascinating to say the least, covering everything from shamanic rituals to the nation’s relationship with its traditional lands. The museum also has a number of fascinating temporary exhibits that change yearly. The best place to get in the water is at the Yeyin Cold Spring or the swimming hole at Roasted Goose Rock near Langdao Village . There is supposedly a single bus around the island per day, but that won’t help you much. You can also rent bikes from many places, but do note that the condition of some roads is not too great. After you make a hotel reservation, your hotel can likely arrange for the scooter company representative to meet you when you flight or ferry arrives, as our hotel did. If not, you can call yourself , or you can just show up and ask around.

If your idea of a great vacation involves relaxing hotels and easy, outdoor activities, then Taitung just might be the one for you. Located in Buowuguan Road, Fengtin village, is a museum rich in cultural history. The museum houses a tremendous exhibit on the different aboriginal groups in Taiwan. Still, spring is a great time to visit because the weather is great, and not too hot like in summer when most Taiwanese visitors come and fill up the island’s limited number of guesthouses. At this time, you may see flying fish on the water if you take the ferry over. Located between breathtaking mountains and an Azure Ocean on a small plain at the southern peak of the East Rift Valley, Taitung, Taiwan offers spectacular landscape views. Many visitors find this tropical destination calming because of its relaxing coastline.

Besides the train-related attractions, you’ll find various artworks on display throughout the grounds. Next to the train line, Tiehua Music Village (鐵花村音樂聚落慢市集) is the focal point of the grounds, where live musical performances take place nightly (5-10 p.m.) from Wednesday to Sunday. Many of the performers are aboriginal, but the vibe is definitely more hip and modern than traditional. The most famous attraction on the archaeological grounds is the collection of “Moon Pillars” (labeled 卑南文化月形石柱 on GoogleMaps). You can reach these in less than 10 minutes on foot from the train station.
This is Taitung’s answer to Huashan Creative Park in Taipei, Cultural Heritage Park in Taichung, and Pier 2 Arts Center in Kaohsiung. The Beinan site has produced several artifacts linking Taiwan’s ancient peoples to the Austronesian cultures found throughout the South Pacific, from Madagascar to Hawaii. Most impressive among the artifacts found here are 200+ stone burial coffins. The site has even been proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Taiwan doesn’t have any yet).

Summer marks the end of the flying fish season, while in winter the Tao rely on dried supply that has been prepared, as well as farmed water taro and sweet potato. Orchid Island is 45km-squared in size, about three times as large as more popular and accessible Green Island 60 kilometers to the north. A very thin strip of flat land circles the island, separating steep cliffs and a mountainous, inaccessible interior from the sea. The highest mountain on the island rises 552 meters from the sea.

A few minutes before the top, a signboard and small parking area indicate the path to Little Heaven Pool, a small pond that is a five-minute walk. A few minutes after passing through Dong Kou, you’ll see a sharp turnoff on the left for Lanyu Lighthouse (蘭嶼燈塔) and Little Heaven Pool (小天池, Do Wawanoanito), the latter of which is indicated on the turnoff sign. The Twin Lion Stones (雙獅岩, Jipanatosan) demarcate the northeastern corner of Orchid Island.
