At Elsa Macleod Kindergarten we proudly educate the youngest children in our town. We strive to create an environment in which each child is respected for their uniqueness, accepted for who they are, and can experience a sense of belonging. Elsa MacLeod Kindergarten has been educating and caring for ‘the youngest children in our town’ for three generations since it was officially opened in 1962.
You will be provided with a list of all centres surrounding your desired location. Long-day kindergarten programs are fee-paying and offset by the Victorian State Government’s free program. Children are capable and confident learners, and our skilled teachers and educators provide them with the support and opportunities they need to become lifelong learners. As Educational Leader Marjoné mentors and guides the team of pre-service teachers, educators, and trainees to ensure the best outcomes for our children.

On tour day, you’ll observe the daily routines and interactions within the centre. You’ll see both indoor and outdoor areas and get all the information you need to make the best decision for your child. Different subsidies may also apply to the kindergarten or preschool programs, depending on the state you live in. Sessional/Free Kindergarten (also known as preschool) typically runs for several hours, two to three days a week, during school term time. It is named after Elsa MacLeod, to commemorate her tireless efforts in establishing Portland’s first kindergarten. If your child becomes unwell while at the centre, teachers will make them comfortable and ask you to pick them up. If you’re not available, they’ll call one of the other contacts listed on your enrolment form. Your child will need a backpack or bag, a refillable water bottle, a change of clothes, a wide-brim sun hat and their favourite toy, which can help them settle in. For kindergarten your child will need morning tea and lunch (dependent on the length of the program day).
